Breakfast with Lisa & Josh #61 - Sometimes you gotta go sideways to go forward

Welcome Back to Breakfast with Lisa & Josh!

It’s all starting to come together.

After finding the 9 euro rail pass in Germany, we felt like this whole thing might actually work. We might be able to make it to Norway. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll make it to Longyearbyen in enough time to be able to make it our friends’ wedding that I’m officiating. I have a feeling they’d be a little bit upset if we didn’t.

Friends in a mine cart are the best kinds of friends

From our last stop we started our journey north in earnest. We spent a few days with our friends near Frankfurt, then spent a few days making our way up to kinda-near-Kiel, Germany - where we had to make a big decision.

Should we go through Denmark, to Copenhagen, and then up through Sweden into Stockholm, and then take the 18 hour train from there all the way to Narvik? That option would be great, but would take a few extra days that we don’t really have, and would cost many, many thousands of dollars.

Our 10am “grillung” :)

Or, we could take an overnight ferry into Oslo from Kiel, and then take trains up through the fjords, and then hopefully, maybe, find a bus that would bring us the rest of the way when the train line ends at the Arctic Circle.

Now that I’m writing it, the choice is pretty easy. Fjords and Arctic Circle. Duh.

So onto the overnight ferry to Oslo we went, and it was absolutely incredible. It felt more like a cruise than a ferry, we had a beautiful private room to ourselves, and it saved us a ton of money that we would have otherwise spent taking trains through Denmark and Sweden. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this particular cruise if you get the chance. Color Line from Kiel to Oslo. Worth the money, for sure.

Cruise ship vibes, for sure

Now we just have to keep heading north, hoping that the trains into the Arctic Circle are working, and that the buses to bring us the rest of the way to Tromso to catch our flight to Longyearbyen actually exist.

Norway is, quite literally, stunning.

This adventure has ended up being entirely different than we thought it would be, but in a very, very good way. There’s still a lot of uncertainty, and we’re still not sure we’re gonna make it, but either way, it’s been a great ride so far.

We’ve gotten the opportunity to see so many places that we would have never otherwise gone to. And honestly, those have all been the best moments of our trip so far.

It really makes me wonder - have we been traveling the wrong way this whole time?

New haircut alert

Today

Hopefully catching a bus to bring us from Fauske to Narvik.

The (Near) Future

One more big bus ride after this, and then we’re in Tromsø, which means we’re only one short plane ride away from Longyearbyen! It’s so close we can taste it!

Oh, and if you want to learn how we afford to take all these trips after quitting our jobs last year, you’ll likely be interested in our Skillshare course on Travel Hacking and Frequent Flier Miles. It’s been really taking off lately, but we still have a few uses of this link left for those of you who want to see the class for free. It comes with a free month of Skillshare, which is more than enough to watch our class and any of the other great courses on there!
