Breakfast with Lisa & Josh #80 - The Next Episode

Welcome Back to Breakfast with Lisa & Josh!

Soundtrack for this newsletter: Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

A little over 3 years ago, when we started this channel, we set out to do one thing above all else.

We wanted to help real people travel the world, because we believe the world would be a better place if world travel was something everyone could experience in their lifetime.

Real talk - our content, at first, did not reflect that priority at all. To be honest, we had no idea what we were doing for, say, the first 100 videos we made. We were making stuff that was all over the place.

The OG Vlog#1. No gym? No prob!

We spent all of our time just figuring out how to even make a video in the first place, no matter what it was about.

We made a video about building a tiki bar. We made a video about our cabin quarantine workouts using a log gym we built. We made a bunch of videos about building a camper van. We made a video about that van breaking down, over and over.

We even, for some reason, made an entire video about cheese curds.

We were finding our footing, practicing, getting some reps in - so that when we left on our trip we would be good enough filmmakers to make something helpful, something useful.

Why was I so angry at that one cheese curd?

While planning our exit from the 9-5 for a life of travel, everything we were finding on social media was the highlight reel, fluffy unattainable travel-adjacent content—$30,000 first class airline seats, $20,000 underwater hotels in the desert, $10,000 per night all-inclusive resorts with camels that bring you their meals (you get the idea).

But for us—even $150 per night hotels sometimes still aren’t realistic.

These videos are a style of travel that’s so far from the way that we or many others we’d met had ever traveled, and all it did was make us feel worse about our lives.

None of them ever shared how they actually made any of those travel experiences happen (or how much they cost).

But maybe that’s the whole point. That style of travel video was probably never made for real people to actually do themselves.

We want to be precise opposite of that.

During our trip, we got to meet a subscriber from Australia. They said they felt bad for not watching our most recent videos, but mentioned it was mostly because the world was open again and they were starting their own travels again. That actually made us happy and reinforced one of our hopes—we want you to eventually stop watching us because you’re out traveling the world on your own adventure.

Then, when you’re back and ready for another one, come on back :)

Who doesn’t love a good spreadsheet?

When we left for what intended to be a 1 year honeymoon, we documented the whole process in as much detail as we could, just in case it could be of help to others who were planning on walking the same “quit your job and travel the world” path.

Turns out there are a lot of us who want to do exactly that. We had no idea how many at the time.

But we know the reality is not very many people can take that much time off of work. A few weeks of vacation is out of reach for many. For the years leading up to our big trip, we only had 10 days of vacation each year, and we would normally use it to see friends or family. A huge international sabbatical felt impossibly far away. Even after scrapping and saving for over 3 years leading up to our trip, we still didn’t really feel like we had enough to feel fully comfortable quitting our jobs.

So we want to get back to helping others travel the way real people travel.

That’s the hope of our entire next series.

Travel in a way that real people actually do it, in locations that real people visit.

A $100 per day budget for the two of us no matter where we go in the world, highlighting all the incredible things to see, do, and eat all over the world, showing how we did it all, including all the attempts and failures along the way, with the help of kind strangers we get to meet, and with an eye on not going broke while doing it.

Coming soon -  3 Days In (Everywhere) On A Budget.

P.S. - We also know that $100 per day is still not affordable for everyone, and our mission here is to make world travel something that everyone can experience in their lifetimes.

We think these videos are a step in the right direction, and that this style of travel can open that door for a lot of people, but not everyone.

We’ve got a plan for that too, but first we gotta make these videos. 🙂

Oh, and if you want to learn how we afford to take all these trips after quitting our jobs 3 years ago, you’ll likely be interested in our Skillshare course on Travel Hacking and Frequent Flier Miles.

It’s been really taking off lately, but we still have a few uses of this link left for those of you who want to see the class for free. It comes with a free month of Skillshare, which is more than enough to watch our class and any of the other great courses on there!

P.S.S. - If the first thing you thought when you saw the email subject was “It’s the D.O. double g” respond to this and let me know :)
